The next installment of the DCEU entered theaters last week, and let me say this...SHAZAM! It's good. I'm going to go into my thoughts of the film and talk about my only gripe with certain superhero films like this one. However, because I want to write one thing about the final act of the film, if you click "read more," you're going to have SPOILERS. SHAZAMILY! I don't know if that phrase is coined by DC, but it should be. The ragtag group of foster kids becomes a group of kids with super powers. I loved the heart of this film. The movie is fun romp with jokes about a teenager becoming an adult (like BIG) only this time, the adult has super powers. Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy is the highlight of discovering the powers of Zachary Levi's Shazam! Asking thieves to shoot him in the face to find out if the suit is bulletproof or the man, is just one of Freddy's moments that delighted me. Asher Angel does a great job as Billy Batson. In his opening scene, he tricks officers of the law, hacks into their computer, and steals their lunch. Right away, we learn that he's a wild card and once Billy receives the powers of Shazam, that wild card character can get into even more mischief. Sorry bullies' trucks. The villain, Mark Strong's Dr. Sivana, is where my major gripe for these films come up. Shazam! & Spider-Man: Homecoming (and the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home) are films about kids getting superpowers, so you'd think the audience for these films would be kids and families. However, Dr. Sivana and the seven deadly sin demons make sure that a PG-13 should be followed. I would not recommend taking any child under the age of 13 to this movie. I don't understand the studio's thought of why a movie about a teen who gets superpowers should not be accessible to children. Also, you'd think with the Shazamily that this movie would be perfect for families. But, instead we get that horror movie scene in the board room that guarantees my kids will not watch this until they are 13 or older. All in all, for anyone over the age of 13, this is great movie full of heart and humor. I highly recommend it and give it 4 stars.
